Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is a complex Irish gin made with green tea. The name “Gunpowder” does not refer to gunpowder, but to the Chinese green tea of the same name. After a slow drying process, the green tea leaves are rolled into small pellets resembling the gunpowder pellets used in old-fashioned firearms.

Production and Botanicals of Gunpowder Irish Gin

Gunpowder Irish Gin is a classic, spicy gin composed of twelve botanicals in total. In addition to Gunpowder tea, it contains eleven other botanicals, including:

  • juniper
  • angelica root
  • meadowsweet
  • coriander
  • kaffir lime

Distillation takes place in Drumshanbo

. In the first stage, eight of the twelve botanicals

are macerated and then distilled in an old pot still. Four additional botanical extracts are then added: lime, lemon, grapefruit

, and Gunpowder

. The aromas are transferred to the distillate through evaporation via an aromatic basket. After distillation, the gin rests for 30 days

to allow the aromas and oils to develop fully. After these 30 days, the gin is cold-filtered, then bottled and labeled by hand at 43% ABV.

Gunpowder Irish Gin on the Nose and Palate

On the nose, Gunpowder Irish Gin is quite sweet and dominated by citrus. Notes of juniper are also perceptible, accompanied by subtle hints of lime and meadowsweet. On the palate, dominant notes of lemon and grapefruit are initially apparent. Here too, the juniper reveals itself with pleasant aromas of green tea, slightly bitter and spicy. With a sweet-spicy and slightly peppery character, its finish is very interesting. Cardamom and anise, combined with juniper and meadowsweet, are particularly dominant here.
