Here’s how the test was conducted

During a blind tasting, the Watson editorial team sampled 33 different cola drinks—served anonymously in identical glasses and straight from the refrigerator. All beverages bearing the name “cola” were included. The participants then assigned ratings according to the Swiss system, which ranges from 1 (mediocre) to 6 (excellent). The varieties tested came from the wide range of brands currently available at major retailers and from the retailers’ own brands—from the well-known classic to the discount version. 

The undisputed number one: Pepsi Zero Sugar

The clear winner of the test is, without a doubt, Pepsi Zero. With an overall score of 5.3, it topped the rankings—with, in particular, one score of 6, four scores of 5.5, and no score lower than 4.75. Not only did it win the “Zero & Light” category, but it also emerged as the cola with the smallest margin of votes.

Expectations Regarding the Brand

Although the winner of the test leaves no room for doubt, this blind taste test demonstrated just how much taste and perception can differ. Numerous cola varieties scored surprisingly poorly, especially when comparing brand expectations (recognizable design, familiar taste) with the results of the blind taste test.

The results show that a familiar brand image is a strength, but that, when it comes to the taste experience itself, consistent performance trumps big names.
