The first barometer on cohesion in Switzerland by Feldschlösschen
How cohesive is Switzerland? What unites us as a society, and where are divisions emerging? These questions have always been a central focus for Feldschlösschen. Since its founding in 1876 in Rheinfelden, Feldschlösschen has been firmly rooted throughout Switzerland. The country’s leading brewery and largest beverage distributor sees itself as a key player in bringing people together and fostering connections. After all, Feldschlösschen is present with its beverages every time a toast is raised in our country.
To gain a comprehensive picture of social cohesion in Switzerland, the polling institute Sotomo conducted a representative study on behalf of Feldschlösschen: the first Swiss Cohesion Barometer 2025. The study addresses fundamental questions: What does cohesion mean to the Swiss population? To what extent does it exist? And how can it be promoted? Of particular interest are the differing perspectives across genders, regions, generations, and political orientations: where do divisions arise, and where does consensus prevail?
The Importance of Cohesion
Social cohesion is a value that is essential to the Swiss population. Only 4% of respondents consider it (somewhat) irrelevant. Opinions differ, however, on the meaning of social cohesion: solidarity, shared rules, and national identity are key aspects that vary depending on political orientation.
Perception of Cohesion
Two-thirds of the population believe that social cohesion is (rather) weak. The differences are particularly marked across political affiliations, social classes, and between native-born residents and immigrants. While men and women feel a sense of unity, social cohesion is crumbling in the eyes of the most vulnerable.
The way to the heart is through the stomach
More than two-thirds of respondents believe that sharing a meal and having a drink together are the most meaningful ways to foster a sense of community. Typically Swiss: barbecues, hikes, and beer tastings are the most popular activities that foster community life. These experiences provide opportunities to exchange views and discuss topics in a relaxed atmosphere, thereby strengthening social bonds.
