Mathias Wüthrich initially suggested “Bellevue,” but it was Theophil Roniger who prevailed with “Feldschlösschen.” The name spoke volumes: the founders wanted to build a real castle—the architecture was to be a symbol of the highest quality. A visionary decision: today, 78% of the Swiss population immediately recognizes the castle, making it one of the most famous buildings in Switzerland.
The castle was built in stages. On February 8, 1876, the first must was produced on the site of a former, disused aniline factory. Starting in 1882, the malt house and storage cellars were built, followed in 1892 by the old fermentation hall with its crenellated towers. The crowning touch: on February 8, 1909—exactly 33 years after the first wort—the new, sumptuous castle-style fermentation hall was inaugurated. It is in this “most beautiful fermentation hall in the world” that all Feldschlösschen beers are still produced today.
In the first half of 1876, 1,873 hectoliters were sold, equivalent to 187,300 liters. Today, that amount would be enough to throw a big party for Rheinfelden’s approximately 14,000 residents. Growth was rapid: in 1877, production reached 4,000 hectoliters; by 1895, it had already reached 50,000; and by 1898, a full 100,000 – Feldschlösschen thus became the largest brewery in Switzerland.
Marie Wüthrich was the backbone of the brewery’s operations. She fed the employees, ran the brewery restaurant, and handled all the company’s accounting—even as the brewery produced up to 32,000 hectoliters—all while raising her six children. Every morning she kept track of the wagons leaving the castle. She embodied social responsibility and was known for her “discreet help to those most in need.” Without her tireless dedication, Feldschlösschen would likely not have survived its early years.
Yes! In our brewing workshops, you can become a brewer yourself under the guidance of true master brewers, in the heart of a historic castle where beer has been brewed since 1876. For those who prefer a more fun approach: at the Brauwelt visitor center, you can virtually brew your own beer, follow the brewing process digitally, and then pour yourself your favorite beer from the largest digital beer tap, equipped with 25 taps.
Yes! 78% of the Swiss population immediately recognizes Feldschlösschen Castle, making it one of the most famous buildings in Switzerland. Mayor Franco Mazzi stated in 2021: “Almost as many people recognize this castle as the Federal Palace.” What began in 1876 as a vision—architecture as a symbol of quality—is today an emblem that unites generations.
The brewery’s horses embody a living tradition: ever since the brewery was founded, horses have been used to transport the beer. Today, these draft horses pull the historic beer wagon during special events. The stable currently houses eight horses, cared for around the clock by a team of four. You can meet them during guided tours or events. They even have their own Instagram account!
