The Tschäggättä – Fearsome Figures with History

During the carnival season, between Candlemas on 2 February and Ash Wednesday, the Tschäggättä roam the villages of the Lötschental. Dressed in animal skins and equipped with hand-carved, grimacing masks, they wander noisily to drive away evil spirits. Originally it was reserved for unmarried men to take on this role, but today anyone who feels like it can appear as a Tschäggättä.

The making of the masks is an art in itself and some examples have already been exhibited internationally.
